Sarah Carolyn Hammond

February 18, 1946- April 1, 2021

Sarah Carolyn Hammond, 75, of Lancaster, passed away Thursday, April 1, 2021 at Lancaster Health and Rehabilitation. She was born February 18, 1946 in Lancaster, the daughter of the late Ross Alexander Hammond and Mildred Howze Hammond.

Sarah loved God, her family, Montreat and Diet Mountain Dew. A woman of quiet strength and perseverance, she lost over 250 pounds over a five year period in the early nineties. She achieved this remarkable feat not through surgery, but through diet, exercise and a steadfast commitment to her goal.

Over her twenty-nine year career as a library assistant at USC Lancaster, she assisted many students in their studies. She was an avid reader, her taste ranging widely from religious tomes to romance novels. She possessed a deep and abiding faith in the Lord, and because of this, exuded a sense of calm and peace in all circumstances. For many years she taught adult Sunday school at Camp Creek United Methodist Church.
She was a profoundly humble person, with the enviable ability to laugh at herself.

She had a deep fondness for cats, much to the consternation of other family members, who did not share this feline obsession. Throughout her life, despite her circumstances, she remained profoundly grateful for and appreciative of simple pleasures. Floating in the pool on a hot summer day. The mountains, in any season. Popcorn. And always, a cold Diet Mountain Dew.

Sarah is survived by her two sisters, Susan Hammond Snipes of Lancaster and Nancy Hammond Marshall of Greensboro, NC, two nieces, two great-nieces and two great-nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 3, 2021 at Camp Creek United Methodist Church in Lancaster, masks required.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Camp Creek United Methodist Church or to the Education Foundational of USC Lancaster, Post Office Box 889, Lancaster, SC 29721.

Lancaster Funeral Home & Cremation Service is serving the family of Mrs. Hammond.
